Supporting agroecological food systems in Benin (West Africa)

Abstract

The project promoted sustainable, resilient and equitable food systems in southern Benin by encouraging the adoption of agroecological practices. Following the success of the DAPRASB project (Dissemination of Agroecological Practices in South Benin), SAF-B further empowered smallholder farmers by strengthening their connections to local food supply chains and advocating for sustainable agricultural policies that encourage such practices. During the 18-month project, 345 farmers (of whom 33 to 35 per cent were women) from the communes of Zè, Toffo and Dangbo received training in agroecological crop protection and soil fertility management. They also learnt how to produce biological inputs such as Bokashi, Apichi biopesticide and ash broth.

Nine farmer field schools were established as living demonstration plots and monitored fortnightly. The project distributed 360 copies of the "Agroecology in West Africa" manual, reaching an estimated 1 725 indirect beneficiaries. Key results included reduced dependence on chemical inputs, strengthened farmer autonomy, improved community cohesion and enhanced climate resilience.
