Strengthening African organic data and statistics

Flyer of the event.

The event is open to everyone with an interest in organic data and statistics and their trends in Africa and globally. (Flyer: FiBL)

A side event organised by FiBL jointly with partners is taking place during the 2nd African Organic Research Conference (AFROREC) on the 25 November 2025 in Egypt. The conference is hosted by SEKEM, Heliopolis University, and the Egyptian Biodynamic Association.

Every year, FiBL and IFOAM Organics International, together with many stakeholders across the globe, join hands to collect data and publish statistics on organic production and marketing trends. These data highlight key trends on:

  • Area of land under organic cultivation
  • Number of organic producers
  • Market size
  • Trade volumes
  • Consumer demands and other information

These key statistics provide sound indications for decision making related to organic by producers, traders, processors, marketers, consumers, policy makers as well as other actors and investors.

Importance of African organic statistics

The reliability of organic statistics is influenced by the quality of the underlying data, the methods and tools used to collect the data, and the capacity and skills as well as knowledge of the people conducting the data collection, processing and analysis. This is why FiBLis jointly organising the side event "Strengthening African Organic Statistics through Capacity Development on Data Collection and Data Management Systems", together with the African Organic Network AfrONet, the Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative EOA-I, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa FARA, IFOAM – Organics International, and the Network of Organic Agriculture Researchers in Africa NOARA.

The side event aims to provide a platform for exchange on the state of organic data and statistics for the African organic context, identify key bottlenecks and opportunities for improving the data collection and management processes. Aspects of agroecology data will also be discussed. Explorations will be made too on the potential for African agroecology data and statistics.

The outcomes will help provide better information and statistics to domestic and global organic actors while enhancing decisions, practice and policymaking. There will be a follow-up session at the next BIOFACH in Nuremberg, Germany, in February 2026.
