FiBL is partnering with the US American Agroecology Fund (AEF) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of community-led seed systems. This initiative evaluates the impact of AEF's support in strengthening grassroots organizations that manage vital agricultural biodiversity and seeks learnings on how to improve AEF's support system. The project adopts a holistic scope that includes breeding and propagation of plant varieties and even domestic animal genetic resources, recognizing their essential role in creating resilient food systems and protecting cultural heritage. The evaluation focuses on six key countries: Brazil, Colombia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, and Mexico/Guatemala.
By combining in-depth document reviews, stakeholder interviews, online surveys, and participatory case studies, the FiBL team identifies on-site the best practices and challenges for building local food security. FiBL's experts use a "contribution story" approach to understand how these initiatives empower communities, influence policy change, and promote mutual learning. The ultimate goal is to generate actionable insights that help communities reclaim seed sovereignty and adapt to climate change. This assessment provides AEF and global partners with the evidence needed to enhance support to protect the genetic diversity of both plants and animals.
