Research by FiBL and Agroscope shows that extending the productive life of dairy cows in Switzerland would benefit greenhouse gas emissions, animal welfare, and farmer finances by reducing young stock rearing costs. Despite these proven advantages, there has been no significant increase in the average productive lifespan of Swiss dairy cows.
Agroscope research suggests that new direct payment schemes could help lengthen cow lifespans, while FiBL finds that systemic barriers prevent farmers from keeping cows longer. Incentives often fail if not aligned with farmers’ realities, leading some to meet only the minimum requirements rather than the scheme’s intention. Therefore, it is crucial for farmers to recognize the benefits and feasible strategies for prolonging cow lifespans amidst complex herd management decisions.
The communication project "AGORA Nutzungsdauer" aims to empower farmers through greater awareness and practical strategies, using an informative short film, printed materials, and feedback from agricultural schools and fairs. The project unfolds in three phases: production and dissemination of educational materials, interactive engagement and feedback collection, and final optimization based on feedback. By promoting cow longevity as an indicator of good farming practice, the initiative seeks to deliver economic, environmental, and animal welfare benefits, and foster ongoing exchange among stakeholders.
