Self-harvest gardens and crowdfarming: promoting innovative producer-consumer partnerships in Switzerland

Original titleSelbsterntegärten und Crowdfarming: Förderung innovativer Produzent*innen-Konsument*innen Partnerschaften in der Schweiz
Abstract

Climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality in access to healthy food are some examples that are also driving efforts in Switzerland to achieve a sustainable transformation of the agri-food system. Part of a sustainable transformation of agriculture includes new approaches to the organisation of value chains and a change in the relationships between the people who produce and consume food.

Self-harvest gardens and crowd farming are two examples of alternative forms of the relationship between producers and consumers that are well established in Austria and Germany. The aim of this project is to evaluate, anchor and strengthen both forms of cooperation between farmers and consumers in the Swiss context by supporting and promoting their implementation by farmers.

As a basis for the promotion of both models in Switzerland, interviews with farmers and stakeholders as well as "joint-learning" workshops with farmers and consumers of established initiatives in Switzerland, Germany and Austria will be conducted in addition to a literature review. The insights gained from this will be incorporated into the development of a training module. As part of the module, courses will be held with farmers and "farmer-to-farmer" exchange meetings and farm visits to pioneering farms in German- and French-speaking Switzerland will be organised. In addition, dissemination will be supported via various channels (social media, podcasts, fact sheets, article in agricultural journal).
