Blue and white lupin

Original titleLupin bleu et lupin blanc
Abstract

Lupin is a popular crop in the organic market, but it is still underdeveloped. Low yields in mixed cropping or the difficulty of controlling weeds in pure cultivation may be the reason.

Within the framework of the European Remix project, field trials were conducted from 2017 to 2020 with farmers in French-speaking Switzerland. The 2020 trials clearly showed that the blue lupin-oat combination (100% and 10% of the pure sowing density) provided good weed control with satisfactory yields for both species. Pure cultivation of blue lupin increases the yield of lupin, but must be coupled with mechanical weed control. The first trials were also carried out with new white lupin varieties tolerant to anthracnose. In the absence of this disease, no benefit was observed for these varieties. On the other hand, trials carried out in German-speaking Switzerland, under heavy pressure, showed the potential of some of these varieties (Frieda and Celina). These results from one year of trials must be validated by continuing the trials for another year in 2021 at Grange-Verney and in an on-farm network.

The objectives for this project are :

  • To control the cultivation of lupins (blue and white lupins).
  • To validate the sowing strengths of lupin and oats in combination.
  • Evaluate the potential of pure blue lupin cultivation.
  • To evaluate the anthracnose tolerance of different white lupin varieties.
