Agriculture - Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation with Biochar

Original titleLandwirtschaft – Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung mit Pflanzenkohle
Abstract

The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) and Canton Aargovia funded project "Agriculture - Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation with Biochar" is part of the development focus "Climate ESP" (Canton Aargau) and aims to examine various possibilities for the use of biochar in agriculture.

Within the framework of the project, five work packages (WP) are being worked on, each with a different focus of research. In work package 1 the quality of currently produced biochar is being investigated. The effect of biochar on methane emissions and animal health will be quantified in feeding trials (WP 2). In addition, the stability of the biochar will be modeled, and soil degradation rates will be calculated (WP 3). In WP 4, the use of biochar in farmyard manure management will be tested and its effect on ammonia and methane emissions will be quantified. In WP5, the potential pathogen-suppresive effect of biochar in the propagation of vegetable crops is investigated.
