Coordination of plant breeding and variety testing for organic farming in Switzerland

Abstract

Crop plants are the basis of our food. The breeding of these crops is part of our heritage. The availability of reproductive planting material of a great choice of adapted crops and cultivars if of uppermost importance for our future. Genetic diversity within and between crops is essential for adaptation on changing environmental conditions and new market demands. FiBL supports organic plant breeders via breeding research and cultivar trials under organic conditions. The overall goal is to provide high quality seed of cultivars adjusted to organic farming conditions with improved yield stability, ecological and economic benefit and high nutritional quality.
