Use of live Black Soldier Fly Larvae in pigs to increase sustainability

Abstract

Feeding insects to livestock has yielded promising results. In particular, feeding live larvae offers significant advantages (local upcycling, animal welfare, resource efficiency, and practicability).

Although scientifically proven, this potential has not yet been realized in practice. With the Omnivore Container, farmers can produce their own feed larvae with minimal investment. Competitors offer larger systems, but these require full-time production.

Using the Omnivore Container as a basis, the project aims to demonstrate that insect larvae can be used to close nutrient cycles on farms. To this end, feeding technology will be developed to enable the straightforward feeding of live insect larvae. Furthermore, synergies with biogas plants will be demonstrated. To this end, the Omnivore Container will be adapted to operate using waste heat. The insect residues will be pretreated for use in the biogas plant. Overall, the goal is to demonstrate the practical feasibility of integrating insect production into pig farming and biogas production.
