Catalogue of disease symptoms in PIWI grape varieties

Original titleKatalog mit Krankheitssymptomen auf PIWI-Rebsorten
Abstract

Fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWIs) play a key role in sustainable viticulture. Their resistance to the most common fungal diseases ensures both yield and quality, while offering enormous potential for reducing the use of plant protection products.

The cultivation of PIWIs has increased significantly in recent years. However, two main challenges have emerged in this context. Firstly, common fungal diseases sometimes exhibit different symptoms on PIWIs than on traditional varieties. Consequently, disease symptoms are often not correctly identified, making it difficult to implement targeted plant protection measures. Secondly, infections caused by fungal pathogens sometimes trigger defence reactions in PIWIs that are often difficult to distinguish visually.

The aim of this project is to photographically document symptomatic disease patterns on PIWI vines and compile them in a systematic collection. The intention is to create a practical, easy-to-use tool that can be used directly in the field to help with decision-making and enable the identification of appropriate measures.
