Digestsols: Analysis of the use of digestate in the Canton of Vaud

Original title

Digestsols: Analyse de l'utilisation des digestats dans le canton de Vaud

Abstract

The project aims to analyse the role of digestate from agricultural anaerobic digestion in soil fertility management in the canton of Vaud and to formulate recommendations for its use. It is part of the Direction générale de l'environnement (DGE)'s efforts to promote the development of anaerobic digestion and nutrient recycling. The study examines the contribution of digestates to maintaining organic matter and soil quality, as well as the agronomic and environmental risks associated with their application (carbon losses, excess nitrogen or phosphorus, micropollutants). It also analyses potential competition between digestate and other sources of organic matter such as manure, compost, or crop residues.

The project is based on scientific literature and an agronomic analysis of the Vaud context. The analyses will depend heavily on the availability of data on organic matter flows and anaerobic digestion facilities. Three phases are planned: knowledge synthesis, agronomic and territorial analysis, followed by the formulation of recommendations. The study will result in a detailed technical report and an executive summary intended for decision-makers at the DGE.
