LIFE Pannonic Salt - Prospects for groundwater-conserving agriculture

Original titleLIFE Pannonic Salt – Perspektiven für eine Grundwasser-schonende Landwirtschaft
Abstract

The region east of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland is home to unique habitats with its soda lakes. However, large-scale groundwater depletion in the region has been threatening the survival of these saline inland waters for several decades. To preserve these valuable ecosystems, the National Park Neusiedlersee - Seewinkel launched the LIFE Pannonic Salt project. The FIBL Austria component of the project focuses on groundwater-conserving and long-term sustainable agriculture in the region. Through scientific research into irrigation techniques, water consumption, drought-tolerant crops and cultivation methods, and animal husbandry, ways are being sought to reconcile agriculture and nature conservation. In collaboration with farmers and regional partners, field trials, workshops, and information campaigns are being implemented to develop practical, sustainable solutions and thus contribute to the long-term preservation of these unique salt habitats.
