Developing sustainable Kilimohai market system for agroecological school meals and mass markets in Muranga county, Kenya

Original titleDeveloping Sustainable Kilimohai Market System for Agroecological School Meals and Mass Markets in Muranga County, Kenya
Abstract

The project "Kilimohai Agroecology for Schools (KA4S)" is an initiative led by Kenyan Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN), in collaboration with Practical Action, FiBL, and Biovision Foundation, to boost agroecological practices in Murang’a County, Kenya.

A core aim is to develop and implement a localised Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) called 'Kilimohai Blue' to verify agroecological produce, running alongside the 'green' organic Kilimohai. The project focuses on establishing and supporting PGS farmer groups and, critically, linking these groups to institutional and public markets, including school feeding programmes. The aim of this link is to ensure a stable supply of affordable, certified agroecological produce for students, thereby improving their nutrition.

Other key activities include raising awareness among consumers and the County Government of agroecological products and gaining their support, as well as documenting project learnings. FiBL provides methodological support and research expertise (e.g. adoption research and the Participatory Market Chain Approach, PMCA) and conducts baseline and endline assessments to scale up this innovative approach. The initiative positions schools as vital markets, thereby fostering resilient food systems and improving the livelihoods of farmers, particularly women, through the adoption of agroecological practices.
