The project aims of "SPG_AMRT" to strengthen the resilience of smallholder farming systems in the Eastern Region of Morocco (Aklim, Jerrada, and southern Oujda) by promoting agroecology, collective organisation, and short food supply chains. It builds farmer groups, which are then organised and function as agroecology Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) groups.
The project addresses climate vulnerability, low farm incomes, and limited market access faced by family farms. It supports the transition to agroecological practices, the structuring of farmer groups certified under the PGS Agroecology Morocco label, and the development of local entrepreneurship in para-agricultural activities such as processing, marketing, and eco-tourism. Key results include improved soil and water management, strengthened farmer capacities, diversified incomes, enhanced access to local markets, and increased availability of healthy, sustainably produced food for consumers.
The project is led by the "Réseau des Initiatives Agroécologiques au Maroc" (RIAM) in partnership with FiBL. FiBL brings added value through its international expertise in agroecology and organic agriculture, its applied research capacity, and its long experience supporting PGS worldwide. Within SPG-AMRT, FiBL contributes to strategic guidance, technical innovation, supervision, and quality assurance, including the development of PGS standards for food processing and livestock production. FiBL also supports training of trainers, facilitates international knowledge exchange, and ensures effective transfer of scientific knowledge into locally adapted practices, thereby reinforcing the credibility, scalability, and sustainability of the PGS system in Morocco.
