Farming on wet soils: perspectives of paludiculture in Switzerland

Original titleWirtschaften mit nassen Böden: Perspektiven der Paludikultur in der Schweiz
Abstract

Paludiculture – the agricultural use of wet peatlands – offers great potential for addressing the climate and biodiversity crises. In collaboration with WWF Switzerland, we are developing a practical information sheet for farmers, agricultural advisors, and land managers. The aim is to provide reliable introductory information to help assess the opportunities of paludiculture and plan initial steps.

The information sheet will present key background on the current relevance of paludiculture in Switzerland. It will outline the conditions under which paludiculture is a meaningful option today and will guide readers step by step through the decision-making process: from site assessment and technical considerations to crop selection, financing, and market access. The sheet is based on interviews with pioneers of paludiculture in Switzerland and experts from abroad.

Opportunities and challenges will be presented: while paludiculture offers benefits such as carbon storage, enhanced biodiversity, and the production of renewable biomass, it also faces legal, financial, and infrastructural barriers. Case studies from Switzerland show how a successful transition can be achieved.
