Global Influence of climate change on seafood sourcing

Original titleGlobaler Einfluss des Klimawandels auf die Beschaffung von Meeresfrüchten
Abstract

Increasing climate change and its effects will have a strong influence on the sourcing of seafood in the future. The main effects will impact fisheries and aquaculture differently depending on the geographical location. Coastal and open water fisheries are mainly affected by the warming of the oceans, the associated dwindling oxygen content, acidification and increasing migration of fish populations. Marine aquaculture (mariculture) is faced with similar effects, in addition to other factors, such as more frequent plankton blooms or increased jellyfish swarms. Inland aquaculture, in turn, is most affected by unpredictable periods of heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfalls.
It is therefore important for Coop to be able to assess which species in the broad seafood range require an early response in order to ensure medium and long-term sourcing.
