Cocoa-based dynamic agroforestry and wild Bolivian specialty cocoa value chain development

Abstract

Climate change and slash-and-burn agriculture are threatening the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia - and with it the livelihood of the local population. The aim of this project is to create a sustainable economic perspective for local smallholder families by promoting cocoa-based agroforestry systems. The project focuses on northern Bolivia.

Together with local partners, FiBL is providing training for smallholder groups and advisors - particularly for the production of "Cacao Nacional Boliviano", the native cacao used for cocoa specialities, as well as for the design, establishment and management of diversified agroforestry systems.

In order to ensure good long-term revenues and purchasing conditions for the producers, the project is building partnerships with international companies active in speciality chocolate production.
