The Coop division Halba imports large quantities of hazelnuts for a wide range of Coop Naturaplan products. The dependency on the main supplier Turkey motivates Halba to look for other supply-sources. With the help of FiBL, suppliers shall be found, evaluated, and new supply chains established.
Yet, the establishment of supply chains in new countries is a big challenge. Not only the technical aspects of agricultural production, but in particular also the logistical and the post-harvest processing complications must be tackled. Most important is the compliancy with the Bio Suisse standards by all actors along the supply chain. All these issues require functional support in the various areas.
