Role of crop diversification in livelihood improvement of Indian organic cotton growers

Title OriginalRole of crop diversification in livelihood improvement of Indian organic cotton growers
Abstract

Organic cotton cultivation should not only be sustainable, but also offer livelihood security to marginal and small farmers. Crop diversification is one of the most promising strategies for increasing and diversifying income, mitigating risks, and maximizing environmental benefits. Diversification techniques such as intercropping, cover crops, and trap crops improve crop productivity and profitability, conserve resources, and provide a biological insurance by favouring predators and natural enemies of cotton pests). This study aims at screening, identifying and recommending crop diversification practices in cotton-based systems across different regions that offer the best combination of agronomic, environmental and economic benefits to organic cotton farmers.
