Abstract

Switzerland has a low self-coverage ratio of protein-rich feed and most of it is imported from abroad. In a master thesis, it was shown that duckweed from the family of Lemnaceae could have a high protein content, when grown on diluted cow slurry, with high growth and area production rates that are many times higher than those of all known terrestrial production systems. Furthermore, the harvested duckweed has been successfully used as a feed ingredient for rainbow trout larvae. Harvesting duckweed, however, is very time-consuming and has to be done on a frequent basis, which leads to the need of an automated harvesting method for Switzerland.

The aim of the project is to evaluate whether technologically low-cost and inexpensive facilities can be used to produce duckweed of sufficient quality as a protein source for fish nutrition in Switzerland.

Detailed Description

Das Projekt wird in einem umfangreichen Ansatz klären, welche Produktionseffizienz (Flächenproduktivität und Nährstoffgehalte der Wasserlinsen sowie der dafür benötigte Energieverbrauch) in einfachen Kreislaufanlagen erreicht werden kann, sowie die Biosicherheit des Produktes untersuchen. Die produzierten Wasserlinsen werden in Futtermittel eingemischt, extrudiert und an Brut und Mastfische kommerziell wichtiger Vertreter der Salmoniden, Perciden und Cypriniden verfüttert und deren Produktionsperformance untersucht. Abschliessend wird die Betriebswirtschaftlichkeit einer möglichen Wasserlinsenproduktion unter den getesteten Bedingungen berechnet.
