After four years, the Horizon Europe project OrganicTargets4EU, in which FiBL was a partner, has concluded. Drawing on research, policy analysis, and multi-stakeholder dialogue, it explored the feasibility and socioeconomic implications of reaching the EU target of 25 percent organic farmland by 2030. Coordinated by IFOAM Organics Europe, the project also examined opportunities for the development of organic aquaculture across Europe.

One of the project's key legacies is the publication of a new series of organic sector factsheets covering 29 European countries. Developed by FiBL in cooperation with the Thunen Institute, the factsheets provide concise and up-to-date overviews of the organic sector in each country. They are available via Organic Eprints archive, the OrganicTargets4EU project website, and the platform Organic Farm Knowledge.

A compilation of practical reference tools

The factsheets compile the latest available data on organic farmland, production, markets, and consumption trends, alongside information on CAP Strategic Plans, eco-schemes, national organic action plans, and policy measures supporting the development of organic farming and aquaculture. Designed as practical reference tools, they provide farmers, advisors, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders with accessible and comparable country-level information.

Pathways to more organic food and farming

In addition, OrganicTargets4EU produced a wide range of outputs, including 12 policy briefs with recommendations for EU, national, and regional policymakers. The briefs outline pathways to increase the adoption of organic food and farming towards continued growth of the sector. Key project outputs include AKIS sector factsheets and practice abstracts highlighting innovative approaches and research findings from across Europe.

*AKIS stands for Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems.

Project background

The Horizon Europe project OrganicTargets4EU (2022-2026) "Transformation scenarios for boosting organic farming and organic aquaculture towards the Farm-to-Fork targets" aimed to support the EU's targets to reach 25 percent of agricultural land under organic farming and a significant increase in organic aquaculture by 2030. By 2024, 11 percent of EU agricultural land was managed organically.
