Can organic agriculture improve yields and incomes for smallholder farmers in Africa?

On 24 September, a side event of the Food Systems Summit will explore different forms of organic agriculture performed in various real farm settings across Sub-Saharan Africa and show to what extent they can contribute to sustainable development. The event is moderated by FiBL researcher Irene Kadzere.

Organic agriculture may not be a silver bullet for solving food security issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, it needs to be reframed from a "do not use specific inputs" to a "do better agroecosystem management" approach. FiBL researchers Christian Schader and David Bautze as well as Gábor Figeczky from IFOAM – Organics International and David Amudavi from the Biovision Africa Trust will demonstrate that, if implemented well, organic agriculture can drastically boost productivity and farm incomes and thus substantially contribute to sustainable development in Africa. They will also highlight examples of various policy measures supporting organic and agro-ecology in African countries.

The event is organised by the two projects ProEcoAfrica and SysCom, which are supported by Stiftung Mercator Schweiz, Hivos, Biovision, Liechtenstein Development Service, Coop Sustainability Fund and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
