Scientist – Plant-Microbiome Interactions (80 - 100 %)

The Plant Breeding group aims to advance sustainable crop production by exploiting microbiome-mediated disease resistance. The offered position is directly linked to the ongoing project AGRIBIOME, in collaboration with KWS AG, the Molecular Plant Breeding group and the Sustainable Agroecosystems group at ETH Zurich.
Job description:

  • Identify microbial and plant genetic markers that regulate microbiome-mediated disease resistance
  • Establish a new generation of plant probiotics that enhance crop resilience
  • Develop strategies to exploit plant-microbe interactions in holobiont-based breeding programmes
  • Co-supervise MSc and PhD students supporting molecular and microbiological work in the lab and the field
  • Significantly advance this research field via high-quality publications, acquisition of research funds and impact-related contributions, never losing sight of practical applications in plant breeding

Your profile

  • PhD degree in Agricultural or Biological Sciences
  • Proven track-record in the area plant-microbiome interactions
  • Experiences with taxonomic and/or functional profiling of microbial communities via NGS technologies and biostatistics are mandatory
  • Competencies in phytopathology and plant genetics including GWAS and genomic selection are advantageous
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills, proficiency in written and oral English, high self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as a team player in a multi-disciplinary, international research environment

Senior Scientist Tropical Agriculture (80 - 100 %)

to lead our long-term farming systems comparison trial in India with a focus on cotton production. The project is part of our SysCom program implemented in India, Bolivia and Kenia (see https://systems-comparison.fibl.org). We are comparing organic and conventional production systems for various aspects including productivity, sustainability, ecology and socio-economy. The program aims to provide solid agronomic and socio-economic data on major organic and conventional agriculture production systems. You will further have the opportunity to engage in other research projects with your specific expertise. The position is located in Frick. Frequent travelling is required.

Ideally you have the following profile

  • A master or PhD in agronomy with a specialization on tropical agriculture or similar education;
  • Research profile and working experience in sustainable cropping systems in the tropics, experience with organic cotton production is an advantage;
  • A good understanding of research for development and interest to work at the interface between research and extension;
  • Working experience in Europe and in Asia, ideally India;
  • Skills in and enjoyment of intercultural communication and international cooperation;
  • Oral and written fluency in English; knowledge of French or German is an advantage;
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, with a significant level of personal responsibility.
