Overview of seed and plant breeding activities of Swiss organisations in developing countries with special focus on organic and low input farming

Abstract

The goal of the project was the assessment of the running seed and plant breeding projects under organic or low input farming conditions in developing countries supported by Swiss organisations or institutions. The survey provided an overview of the status quo of Swiss seed projects in developing countries and elucidates reasons for the shortage of organically produced seed in developing countries. Recommendations are drawn to improve availability of seed and planting material in order to safeguard food security, counteract risks of climate change and support sustainable production systems.
