Promotion of agroecological and organic value chains for the Colombian and European markets

Original titleFomento de cadenas de valor agroecológicas y orgánicas para los mercados colombiano y europeo
Abstract

The project supports smallholder producer organisations and cooperatives in Colombia in developing efficient, resource-saving and market-oriented production and processing systems for agroecological and organic products. A key focus is to connect sustainable agricultural practices with new market opportunities, both in Colombia and in Germany and other European markets.

The project follows two complementary market approaches. Export-oriented cooperatives will be supported in establishing and strengthening Internal Control Systems (ICS) and in meeting international quality and certification requirements. At the same time, Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) will be promoted to facilitate market access for smallholder producers, strengthen local value creation and support sustainable food systems in Colombia.

Building on the experience of the German-Colombian Training and Demonstration Project for Agroecology (PACA), the initiative combines practical training, knowledge exchange, networking and business cooperation. Together with Colombian and German partners, the project will develop sustainable value chains covering production, post-harvest management, processing, certification and marketing. It will also create opportunities for cooperation with German companies, importers and providers of innovative technologies and expertise.

The project contributes to more resilient and sustainable agricultural and food systems in Colombia while strengthening bilateral economic and knowledge exchange. By linking smallholder organisations with local and international markets, the project creates long-term benefits for producers, businesses and consumers in both Colombia and Germany.

FiBL contributes expertise to the organisation and moderation of networking events, facilitates exchange among relevant public and private stakeholders, and provides practical guidance on the EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 and its relevance for producer organisations in Colombia. FiBL also advises the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture on organic farming regulations and certification and supports the systematic documentation and analysis of project results and lessons learned.
