Complementary study to create a substantial market and scalable value chains for paludiculture products

Original titleErgänzende Studie zur Schaffung eines grösseren Marktes und skalierfähigen Wertschöpfungsketten für Paludikultur-Erzeugnisse
Abstract

The project is part of a study by Systain Consulting GmbH, which is investigating the potential for developing new value chains for paludiculture* cultivation in Germany in order to restore dried peatland. The aim is to determine the interest of selected value chains in integrating raw materials from paludiculture* into their production processes.

FiBL Switzerland, in cooperation with FiBL Austria, is researching the relevance of the following topics for the development of paludiculture value chains:

  1. Application area Energetic utilization of paludiculture: One of the possible uses of paludiculture is the provision of biomass for energy production through combustion (burning) or biogas synthesis. However, studies have shown that the suitability of the biomass for the combustion depends on the location.
  2. Material utilization from biogas synthesis: In addition, the suitability of the material utilization of by-products of biogas production from paludicultures is being examined.
  3. Customer structure: The customer structure between agriculture and industry plays a decisive role in the development of paludiculture, as sufficient material must be made available for processing.

*Paludiculture is wet agriculture and forestry on peatlands.
