Bioinformatics Server for Big Data

Abstract

Current and future projects are generating increasingly large amounts of data that need to be processed before statistical analysis. FiBL is currently active in projects including (meta-)genomics, imaging processing (drones, microscopy), and machine learning. All these tasks pose immense computing requirements and produce vast amounts of data.

With an on-site bioinformatics server for big data processing, FiBL will become more independent of external computing facilities while at the same time ensuring data security.

The following goals will be evaluated after two years to estimate the demands for a continuation or extension of this project:

  • Installing and configuring the operating system and software, setting up users
  • Introducing FiBL staff on how to use the server
  • Operation and maintenance, server usage monitoring and data storage evaluation
  • Collecting feedback on demand and knowledge
  • Providing a simple and efficient user experience
