Innovative animal-friendly husbandry standards for organic pig and cattle housing within the framework of the amended EU Organic Regulation

Original titleInnovative tiergerechte Haltungsverfahren für die ökologische Schweine- und Rinderhaltung im Rahmen der geänderten EU-Öko-Verordnung
Abstract

Innovative, particularly animal-friendly husbandry methods, in which indoor and outdoor areas cannot be clearly separated from each other or in which functional areas typical of stables are relocated to the outside, have become increasingly common in recent years. It must be ensured that these innovative, particularly animal-friendly husbandry methods comply with the requirements of the new EU Organic Farming Regulation.

A scientific description will be elaborated from the point of view of animal welfare on the demands of pigs and cattle with regard to the space in the indoor and outdoor area, or on the entire space if these areas cannot be clearly demarcated from each other. An elaboration of these requirements is being prepared in the project for submission to the Expert Group for Technical Advice on Organic Production (EGTOP).

FiBL is working together with the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut in Celle on the scientific background of pigs.
