Efficiency and sustainability of producing and feeding insect-based feedstuff to fish and poultry

Original titleEffizienz und Nachhaltigkeit der Herstellung und Verfütterung von Insekten-basierten Futtermitteln für Fische und Geflügel
Abstract

The extent of protein feed for terrestric livestock and of fishmeal for aquaculture imported to Switzerland has become critical, for both conventional and organic sectors. Developing solutions focusing on insect-based feed components as alternative strategies is becoming increasingly relevant.

Yet, many aspects remain unresolved, particularly regarding the efficiency and sustainability of insect rearing and processing. The project addresses this topic using the Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illucens, as a model.

In a comprehensive approach, key factors influencing nutrient efficiency throughout insect production up to subsequent feeding of insect-based feedstuffs to fish and poultry will be analysed.

Larvae feeding substrates, rearing regimes, subsequent product (protein and fat) usage of insect-based feeds, digestibility and productivity in target livestock species (fish and poultry) will be subjected to thorough sustainability analyses.

Overall, the project aims at providing a sound knowledge base for evaluating and optimising the production and implementation of insect-based feeds within presently regulated frameworks (aquaculture) and for future perspectives (poultry). Thereby, political as well as economic developments will be supported.
