FiBL scientist Sarah Oberländer has been appointed to the European Commission’s new Expert Group on Nature Credits, which starts its work today. Her expertise in biodiversity and agricultural practice will help shape EU methods for valuing and rewarding nature.

The start of this expert group marks an important step in the EU's efforts to build credible, science-based mechanisms for mobilising additional funding for biodiversity. The group will assist the European Commission in preparing legislative proposals and policy initiatives.

Sarah Oberländer brings a strong agricultural and scientific background to this work. Working as a research associate at FiBL in Germany for the past four years, she has worked on integrating biodiversity promotion into farming practice—an issue central to both FiBL's research and the policy challenges addressed by the expert group. Her experience covers incentives for biodiversity-enhancement on farms, the development of compensation models, and the assessment of methodologies such as the Product Environmental Footprint. Through this work she has gained practical and scientific expertise on biodiversity indicators, certification systems, and the opportunities and limitations of representing ecological complexity in standardised assessment tools.

With her appointment, FiBL's longstanding expertise in advancing biodiversity in agriculture will be directly reflected in the Commission's work. She will help shape the methods for valuing and rewarding nature, including by creating new income opportunities for farmers. FiBL warmly congratulates Sarah and looks forward to supporting her contribution to building ascientifically robust framework for EU nature credits.
