With the growing criticism on palm oil, the interest in coconut oil as an alternative oil source is increasing. Yet, as coconuts are also often grown in large plantations, in monoculture, it is only a matter of time before this crop, similar to palm oil, falls into disrepute if it is not cultivated in a sustainable manner. Thereby, agroforestry is a promising way forward, making production systems more diverse and resilient while positively enhancing soil fertility and hectare yields over time. The overall goal of this project is to develop sustainable production and sourcing structures for Fairtrade & Bio Suisse certified coconut oil through a project that at the same time promotes dynamic agroforestry practices in coconut production.
