Development of selection systems and participatory breeding for weed suppression or tolerance of Swiss soya

Original titleEntwicklung von Selektionssystemen und partizipativer Züchtung auf Unkrautunterdrückung bzw. -toleranz für Schweizer Soja
Abstract

In organic soybean cultivation, weeds cause the biggest problems and loss of yield due to slow crop development and late weeding. Therefore, the characteristic weed suppression should not only be tested on the finished variety, but should already be considered in the breeding process. The aim of the project is to develop different selection systems for weed suppression and weed tolerance and to combine them with the selection for local adaptation and suitability of food soybeans, thus increasing the cultivation fitness for organic farming.

Direct selection methods (cultivation with sowing of artificial weeds) as well as indirect selection criteria (correlated characteristics which can also be reliably recorded in the absence of weeds) are compared with each other and verified in on-farm tests under organic conditions. In addition, pre-breeding material for the development of a participatory on-farm selection under organic conditions will be developed.
