Researchers propose that the introduction of black soldier flies into the processing of municipal solid waste will produce multiple benefits: composting of municipal solid waste will be accelerated, processing costs will be reduced, and compost of improved quality will be available for improving soil fertility. Furthermore affordable high quality fish feed will be produced from the back soldier fly larvae. The project plans to involve unemployed young people in the compost production.
The results of this research project are thus expected not only to contribute to the improvement of municipal solid waste and soil fertility management, but also to enable income generation for smallholders and fishermen/women, as well as unemployed young people.
The research is based on the experience with a similar FiBL research and development project on insect mass production and on compost experiments that have been conducted by the involved researchers from FiBL and Ghana. The project will be implemented by FiBL Switzerland in close cooperation with the University of Ghana, the Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute (BNARI) and the CSIR-Water Institute (all Ghana).
