Training of experts in the application of the SMART-Farm Tool for assessing farm sustainability

The excessive and inconsistent use of the term "sustainability" presents challenges for food companies, farms, associations and research: How to assess the sustainability performance of farms? SMART-Farm (Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment RouTine) offers solutions for this, it uses relevant indicators to assess the degree to which farms achieve the goals defined in the FAO SAFA guidelines across the environmental, economic, social, and good governance dimensions of sustainability. It follows a standardised assessment methodology, which allows the comparison of results from different farms.

During this 5-day course (Module 1: Theory) you'll dive deep into the sustainability assessment principles, the FAO SAFA guidelines, the origins and development of the SMART-Farm methodology and its potential applications. Through dynamic presentations, interactive exercises, insightful role-plays and a farm visit you'll gain practical skills to measure sustainability using a proven methodology that has been in use for over 10 years. Past participants have praised the course for providing a comprehensive overview of sustainability assessment, valuable insights into the challenges of indicator definition, and practical guidance on how to engage with farmers to collect data efficiently and with high quality.

To apply the SMART-Farm Tool independently, a separate practical course must be completed (Module 2: Practice; please get in touch for further information).
