Partnership for Sustainable Apiculture – a national competence center for innovative organic beekeeping, applied knowledge transfer and participatory education

Original titlePartnership for Sustainable Apiculture – a national competence cen-ter for innovative organic beekeeping, applied knowledge transfer and participatory education
Abstract

Considering Romania’s role and potential as a honeybee habitat and apicultural producer, this partnership project aims at closing a gap in educational opportunities for the country’s beekeeping community. The evolving Competence Center will target professional and hobby beekeepers alike, with extra benefits for beginners, the youth and people with special needs.

Activities include seminars and workshops, consulting, publications, study visits, networking and marketing support.

Central outputs are beekeepers’ education and practical training, with a strong focus on organic beekeeping, consumer awareness building and the promotion of organic apiculture as a sustainable way of generating income with domestic resources, in particular in rural areas. The infrastructural basis is laid at the village school of Hamba/Sibiu county, with seminar and processing facilities for instruction, a demo-apiary, mating station and nectar supply monitoring.

FiBL’s competence in organic agriculture and organic beekeeping training and knowledge transfer merge with Melikoleg’s country-specific expertise, to reduce development disparities via improved educational opportunities.
