Barry Callebaut cocoa production research: System research approach to increase cocoa sustainability

Abstract

Cocoa production faces several problems such as decreasing yields, high pest and disease pressure as well as high input costs, which challenge productivity at worldwide level. The aim of this project is to establish a scientific viable and practice-oriented research program on production systems and methods to increase the sustainability, productivity and quality of cocoa. Different production systems (monoculture and two types of agroforestry with trees of different ages) are monitored, optimized and evaluated according to their productivity and sustainability with special focus on soil fertility.
