Organic sweet fennel production in Switzerland

Original titleBiologischer Süssfenchelanbau in der Schweiz
Abstract

At the end of 2022, Coop and Morga AG expressed the need for Swiss organic sweet fennel to Bio Suisse. As sweet fennel is a crop that requires warmth, it has so far been cultivated mainly in countries such as Egypt and France. For Swiss farmers, cultivation is associated with a certain risk (bad weather and hardly any available varieties). In order to ensure the reliability of cultivation and the long-term availability of high-quality Swiss organic produce, it is imperative that cultivation trials be carried out.

The aim of the project is to explore with the cultivation trials whether organic sweet fennel can be grown economically in Switzerland. In order to make this possible, the project wants to contribute to:

  • increase cultivation security
  • identify adapted and high-yielding varieties
  • optimise cultivation techniques
  • acquire new farmers for production to ensure Coop's long-term supply of Swiss organic sweet fennel
