Guide on good agricultural practice in irrigation management

Cover: Good agricultural practice in irrigation management

Agriculture is called out to apply all possible measures to maximize water use efficiency. Application of good agricultural practices in irrigation management can contribute to reducing the water footprint of agriculture.

A new guide of FiBL shall help farmers and agricultural consultants to improve irrigation practices and to achieve sustainable water management.
The guide was commissioned and financed by the Swiss retail chain Coop in the frame of its engagement in sustainable development. The Swiss farmer organisation Bio Suisse also made a financial contribution to the realisation of this guide.

The guide leads through the calculation of the optimal irrigation quantity based on relevant soil characteristics, crop water stress tolerance and actual crop water demand. It also offers a comparison of the different irrigation systems und provides a first insight into climate-smart irrigation techniques.

The guide is available in English and Spanish for free download.
