Assessment of hygienic risks linked to the use of liquid digestates in Switzerland

Abstract

The project's aim was to perform a characterisation of the hygienic state of Swiss liquid digestates in relation to the initial materials as well as to the applied techniques.

Three sampling campaigns were carried out: The first in the winter of 2012-2013 (15 and 28 November 2012), the second in the spring of 2013 (16 April and 6 May 2013), and the third in the summer of 2013 (10 and 22 September 2013). Twenty representative fermentation plants were examined in detail: Five thermophilic, twelve mesophilic and two mixed fermentation plants. This implies the examination of different initial materials as well as of the digestate in different stages of the process.
