Increasing profitability of stockless arable crops by optimization of soil fertility management

Abstract

The local yield potential is often not fully exploited in stockless organic farms. The causal factors will be explored in an on-farm survey in Germany. Subsequently, optimization strategies will be proposed and evaluated in field experiments. The aims of the project are:

  • to increase our knowledge regarding interactions between pedoclimatic conditions, soil fertility, crop management and plant productivity of legume and cereal crops
  • the optimization of soil management, mixed cropping systems and organic soil fertility management
  • an assessment of validated management methods with respect to economic feasibility, energy and climate relevance
  • a direct transfer of knowledge to farming practice.

The project is led by FiBL Germany and conducted in collaboration with a wide range of German research partners. FiBL Switzerland focuses its activities on research related to soil fertility and plant health.
