1.1 FiBL at the 18th Organic World Congress

The 18th Organic World Congress (OWC), which is regularly convened by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), took place from 13 to 15 October 2014 in Istanbul. As part of the congress’ scientific track FiBL staff presented their current research work in more than 20 oral and poster presentations, addressing topics such as reduced tillage, organic farming in the tropics, communication of research results, and organic sector statistics. Moreover, FiBL organized or co-organized a range of events at the congress.

1.2 TIPI vision and strategy for organic farming research presented in Istanbul

Organised by FiBL, a workshop of TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) was held on October 12, 2014, as a preconference of the Organic World Congress of IFOAM. At the workshop, the TIPI vision and strategy for organic farming research was discussed.The next TIPI event, Science day, will be held at Biofach 2015.

1.3 IFOAM Animal Husbandry Alliance (IAHA) at the Organic World Congress in Istanbul

The Animal Husbandry Alliance (IAHA) of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) is an informal network of individuals and organizations interested in supporting and strengthening the development of organic animal husbandry within IFOAM. The Alliance organized a number of events at the IFOAM Organic World Congress in October in Istanbul and presented its Istanbul declaration.

1.4 Re-Use the phosphorus! Stakeholder workshop on P-recycling (video)

At a workshop during the 18th Organic World Congress in Istanbul in October 2014, researchers from the Improve-P project discussed recycling of phosphorus (P) in organic agriculture with stakeholders from several European countries.

1.5 Taste of the Ukrainian Carpathians at the Salone del Gusto 2014

For the first time ever, the Taste of the Ukrainian Carpathians Trademark was presented to a large international audience at the Salone del Gusto – Terra Madre from October 24-27 in Turin. Over 220,000 visitors visited the Salone, many of them tasting the regional, authentic and tasty products from the Ukrainian Carpathians.

1.6 Videos about the OrganicDataNetwork project

The EU-funded project "Data network for better European organic market information" (OrganicDataNetwork), is a collaborative project that increases transparency of European organic food market through better availability of market intelligence on the sector. Three new videos inform about the project and some major outcomes.

1.7 Participatory research – an efficient tool to empower farmers and foster innovation

Participatory agricultural research has emerged as an internationally acknowledged method to integrate farmers' experience and skills into the innovation process. A symposium in Zurich with experts and project partners of FiBL Switzerland has emphasised that the approach should include all stakeholders and must always keep the markets in mind in order to produce effective and sustainable results.

1.8 FiBL’s scientists debate research findings at Tropentag conference

This year’s Conference on Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural and Natural Resource Management (Tropentag) was held in Prague in September. With eleven contributions, FiBL’s projects made up an essential part of the three-day event, enriching the debate by introducing the issues surrounding organic farming.

1.9 Food wastage costs the world 2.6 trillion dollars each year

What are the costs to society of food wastage and which preventive measures make macro-economic sense? FAO has now unveiled a study produced by FiBL’s scientists, which reveals the social costs. The scale is huge, running to some USD 2.6 trillion per year. Action against food waste would be worthwhile in many cases.

1.10 Successful final workshop on the promotion of organic farming at universities in South-East Europe

The final workshop of the SCOPES (Scientific co-operation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland) project "Promoting university education in organic farming in South-East Europe" took place at the faculty of agricultural sciences of the University of Tirana in Albania.

1.11 FiBL co-founder Michael Rist has died

Michael Rist was one of seven individuals who established the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Organic Agriculture on 1 February, 1973, the foundation which supports the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). He also managed to bring Hartmut Vogtmann on board as FiBL’s first director. On the 17th of August 2014 Michael Rist died aged 87.

1.12 FiBL researcher wins SFIAR award

FiBL team member Dr. Gurbir S. Bhullar has received the 2014 research award from the Swiss Forum for International Agricultural Research (SFIAR). The former ETH Zurich researcher has explored an interesting possibility for farmers to cultivate climate-neutral rice while also creating added value.
