1 Research

1.1 FiBL Europe celebrates its opening

On 13 July 2017, FiBL inaugurated its new office in Brussels. It builds a bridge between FiBL’s sound scientific knowledge on organic farming and the policy-making processes taking place in Brussels. On the occasion of the inauguration of FiBL Europe, FiBL presents itself with a modernized corporate design including a refreshed logo.

1.2 LIVESEED project - Boosting organic seed & plant breeding

1 June 2017 marked the official start of the LIVESEED project. The objective of this 4-year project is to improve the performance and sustainability of organic agriculture by boosting organic seed and plant breeding efforts, and increasing the availability of cultivars adapted to organic growing conditions.

1.3 INRA-FiBL collaboration for research in the field of organic agriculture

On 25 April 2017, FiBL and the French National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA) signed a partnership agreement in Laqueuille (in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region) to strengthen research in the field of organic agriculture. The collaboration will support existing activities and help in the development of new projects.

1.4 FiBL and Korean partners: Organic strategies for fruit orchards

In a new project, FiBL will cooperate with Korea to test fruit varieties and plant protection agents. FiBL and its Korean research partners signed a long-term cooperation agreement as well as a second cooperation project. The first project was completed successfully in 2014.

1.5 New joint organic research center established in China - FiBL and IGDB sign collaboration agreement

Recently, FiBL and the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established the Sino-Swiss Organic Agriculture Research Center (SSOARC). With this new institute, FiBL and IGDB will provide a wide range of services in the field of knowledge transfer and research.

1.6 Voluntary Sustainability Standards: Growth continues

The new report "State of Sustainable Markets 2017: Statistics and Emerging Trends", covering 14 Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS), shows continued growth across all products and all standards. The report presents data that helps small firms take advantage of trends to supply consumers with products that are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. To strengthen the data collection efforts on Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) worldwide, FiBL signed a cooperation agreement with ISEAL Alliance in June 2017.

1.7 Tillage without using a plough: beneficial for soil and climate

Ploughless tillage can reduce soil erosion and contribute to protecting the climate. Two recent publications by FiBL on reduced tillage support this thesis.

2.1 Conference "Accelerating innovation - the role of science, policy and practice"

On November 8, 2017, the conference "Accelerating innovation - the role of science, policy and practice" will take place as a pre-conference of the Organic World Congress in Dehli, India. The pre-conference is organized by FiBL and TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM - Organics International. Registration is now open; participation is free of charge. Registration is compulsory to get your food voucher for the event.

2.2 Pre-conference on animal husbandry at the 19th Organic World Congress in India

On 7 and 8 November 2017, the conference "Role of livestock in sustainable agriculture" will take place as a pre-conference of the Organic World Congress in Dehli, India. FiBL is a co-organiser of the event. Additionally, from 2 to 5 November 2017, there are excursions, and on 6 November a workshop on the use of Ayurveda and traditional medicinal plants for animal health will take place.

2.3 Organic Food System Programme earns recognition by United Nations Action Framework

The Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Programme of the United Nations’ 10-Year Framework on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) has endorsed the Organic Food System Programme (OFSP) as one of its eight Core Initiatives. FiBL contributes to the goals of the Organic Food System Programme with its broad expertise from basic research to extension services. Organic food systems are posed as a model for sustainability, and they can serve as living laboratories for continued learning and improvement, integrating science and research with real-world examples. With its partner organizations and involved individuals on all continents, the Organic Food System Programme helps share the benefits of organic practices with interested initiatives and across all of society.

2.4 Bocadillo Veleño - Colombia has protected its prestigious sweet with a denomination of origin

The Bocadillo Veleño, a Colombian confectionary made of guava pulp from the region of Vélez in the north of Colombia is now protected by the Colombian Government with a Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO). Since 2012, FiBL has facilitated the formulation of the Code of Practice of this typical product and the set-up of the umbrella organisation FedeVeleños (Federación de Empresarios de la cadena productiva del Bocadillo veleño)

2.5 New and improved FiBL online shop

The extensive FiBL shop containing over 400 publications has been completely remodelled and optimized for mobile devices. The publications, available in print or online form, can now be filtered by topic, format, language, version or county edition. The advanced search tool found in the footer can now be used to combine various search criteria.

3.1 Report on the EU Common Agricultural Policy and deforestation

A new FiBL report on the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and deforestation was released in May. It had been commissioned by the forests and forest people’s rights NGO Fern. It analyses how current CAP measures may lead to deforestation abroad and how the next CAP reform may best act against this.

3.2 New FiBL report on organic agriculture and climate change

At the end of April, a new report on the potential of organic agriculture to mitigate climate change was published. This report had been commissioned to FiBL by the IFOAM-EU Group, the European umbrella organization of organic producers, processors and other stakeholders of organic agriculture. It is the most recent review on the potential of organic agriculture to contribute to climate change mitigation. Furthermore, it reviews the contribution of organic agriculture to other aspects of sustainability, such as biodiversity or – complementary to climate change mitigation – adaptation to climate change.
