1. News

1.1 Urs Niggli elected president of TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM

At the first council meeting of TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), Urs Niggli, director o FiBL, was elected as president by the TIPI council. Vice presidents are Uygun Aksoy from Izmir University in Turkey and Brian Baker; an independent consultant from the United States.

1.2 Better organic data for Europe: project launches discussion forum on the problems of compiling organic market data

A public discussion on the improvement of organic market data collection in Europe is now open at the Organic Data Forum. The online Organic Data Forum was set up to provide a platform for discussion and the exchange of ideas on any topics related to organic market data and is intended to make available a networking space for organic data owners, collectors and publishers. Recently the second project Newsletter was published with information about current activities; it is available at the project website.

1.3 New project: Coordinating organic plant breeding activities for diversity (COBRA)

A new European-wide project to support the development of plant breeding focused on the needs of organic producers has recently begun.

1.4 FiBL partnership with New Zealand

Following a visit to New Zealand by a Swiss delegation in 2009, New Zealand’s Minister of Agriculture David Carter and the former director of the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture Manfred Boetsch signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. It is in the framwork of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases , in which the two countries exchange information on actions and research activities.

1.5 Bioforsk and FiBL – Partnership strengthened

Recently the directors of the Organic Food and Farming Division of Bioforsk, the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research, visited FiBL. Sissel Hansen from Bioforsk, who is currently staying at FiBL for a sabbatical, reports.

1.6 First issue of the CO-FREE Newsletter now available

The replacement of copper is a key priority in organic farming. The new EU-funded project “Innovative strategies for copper-free low input and organic farming systems” (CO-FREE; www.co-free.eu) aims to develop innovative methods, tools and concepts for the replacement of copper in European organic and low input fruit, grapevine, potato, and tomato production systems. FiBL is a partner in this project.

2.1 Call for papers: 4th International Conference on Organic Agriculture Sciences (ICOAS)

The call for papers and call for symposia are now open for ICOAS 2013. The deadline for submission is July 1, 2013.

2.2 Call for papers: International Symposium on Organic Agriculture in the Mediterranean region and products with designation of origin

The international conference on organic agriculture in the Mediterranean will be held from the 2nd to 4th of December in Agadir, Morocco. A further important topic of the conference is distinguishing the quality of agricultural products by guarantees of their origin.

3.1 Open day at FiBL on August, 25, 2013

The day provides the best opportunity to visit FiBL, to discuss and consult with FiBL researchers, to gain insight into many projects and to enjoy good food from our organic kitchen.

3.2 October 9-13, 2013: 4th International Conference on Organic Agriculture Sciences (ICOAS) in Hungary

The 4th Scientific Conference on Organic Agriculture in Central and Eastern Europe will be held 9-13th October 2013 in Hungary.

3.3 Multicriteria assessment and communication of effects of organic food systems

On November 25 & 26, 2013, the International Conference "Multicriteria assessment and communication of effects of organic food systems" will take place at Aarhus University, Denmark, 25th – 26th November, 2013. FiBL scientist Christian Schader is one of the keynote speakers.
