Every two years, the Foundation fiat panis honours young academics whose research focuses on solutions to mitigate hunger in food deficit countries with the Josef G. Knoll European Science Award. On 17 September 2018, the Foundation presented the award in the framework of the Tropentag conference in Ghent, Belgium. Among the 14 applications, the jury selected three winners, one of them is Christian Andres, researcher at FiBL Switzerland.

His dissertation "Transdisciplinary systems research to reduce the cocoa swollen shoot virus disease in Ghana" focuses on Ghana as the second largest producer country of cocoa in the world, where the livelihoods and food security of around 3.2 million people depend on revenues from the crop. One of the major factors limiting cocoa productivity for those farmers is the cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD), which threatens the livelihoods of the farmers. Measures such as agroforestry and barrier cropping hold a high potential to mitigate the severity of CSSVD symptoms and reduce the spread of the disease, respectively.
