FiBL launches new Organic Agriculture Research & Advisory Institute in Hungary

As part of its project 'Advancing Organic Agriculture Research in Hungary,' the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) based in Frick, Switzerland recently established a new Organic Agriculture Research and Advisory Institute (Ökológiai Mezőgazdasági Kutatóintézet – ÖMKi) in Hungary. ÖMKi’s regularly updated website is in the Hungarian language and available at www.biokutatas.hu.

ÖMKi’s purpose is to initiate and coordinate innovative applied research projects and thus to advance the development and competitiveness of Hungarian organic agriculture and food production. As a first step, ÖMKi launched a PhD and Postdoc scholarship program. Six dissertations have been selected from over 20 proposals.

The young scientists selected for the program will start their projects in autumn 2011. Their topics cover aspects such as sustainable food production, food safety, soil microbial biodiversity, organic animal husbandry as well as the application of old vegetable varieties in Hungarian organic production.

The 'Advancing Organic Agriculture Research in Hungary' project is funded by the Pancivis Foundation in Vaduz.
