GMO residues in organic produce – assessment and interpretation

Date

Monday, 4 - Wednesday, 6 November 2008

Place

FiBL in 5070 Frick, Switzerland

Content

Organic farming abstains from the use of genetically modified organisms. However, GMOs can inadvertently contaminate organic foods through pollen dispersal, bought-in feeds, or cooperatively used machinery for transport, storage or processing.

GMO residues in organic production are a sensitive topic. Therefore, inspection bodies and operators need tools and concepts to handle cases of adventitious presence of GMOs in organic products.

This course

  • provides understanding why genetic engineering is excluded in organic farming
  • gives an introduction into the legislation on genetic-engineered organisms and organic Eu-production exemplified by some national and international laws
  • provides information on sources of GMO-contamination and its analysis and interpretation
  • and suggests a tool for critical control points in organic farming and processing
