Protecting laying hens against red poultry mites

Veronika Maurer

Purpose

To prevent mite infestations without the use of acaricides (miticides) containing synthetic active ingredients.

Methods

The efficacy of numerous mechanical methods and natural agents were assessed through laboratory and real housing situations.

Results

Based on a previous study by Veronika Maurer which demonstrated that good hygiene is the major factor in limiting/preventing mite (mainly D. gallinae) infestation, a three fold approach to mite control was established encompassing hygience, continuous monitoring and the use of natural agents.
