Eric Meili, FiBL Advisory Service, Beat Bapst, FiBL Animal Husbandry Breeding Division, Toralf Richter, FiBL Socio-economic Division and Hubertus Hertzberg, FiBL Veterinary Parasitology.

Sponsors): Migros.

Purpose

A multi-disciplinary study to assess the current situation of organic pastured beef cattle through a strengths/weaknesses analysis.

Methods

This multi-faceted program encompasses two consumer surveys, site visits to Migros to check meat presentation and staff knowledge of the program, calculation of the economic impact of converting from dairy to organic pastured beef and research on parasites in organic cattle.

Results

The outcomes thus far have resulted in the development of a training program for Migros butchers, publication of an information leaflet for farmers who are considering program participation, and stable high prices for the slaughter animals.
