European markets for organic products are developing fast; more and more farm land is converted to organic production.

In order to adjust production and consumption levels, detailed market information is needed. This is especially relevant for decisions involving the conversion of specific land or livestock enterprises that require high investments into glasshouses, housing, processing facilities, etc. Likewise, valid, accurate and up-to-date data information is essential for policy-makers, consultants, the processing industry and others.

Most European countries gather only very basic data on organic farming. In many cases, important market data, e.g. the amount of production, consumption, international trade or producer and consumer prices, does not exist. Furthermore, there is no standardization in the collection of data which are therefore seldom comparable. Thus only rough estimates of the levels of organic food production and consumption in Europe are available.

EISfOM is a European Concerted Action (CA), which aims to build a framework for reporting valid and reliable data of relevant production and market data from the European organic sector in order to meet the needs of policy makers, farmers, processors, wholesalers and other actors involved in organic markets.
