Fallows - higher diversity through proper management

Purpose

To maintain the quality of fallow over longer periods.

Methods

Trials on maintenance techniques were conducted in two locations comparing the following measures in a spring and autumn variant: cut only; cut and cultivation with spring-tined harrow; cut and cultivation with chisel plow.

Results

The trials resulted in recommendations for fallow maintenance based upon the site characteristics and whether cutting or cultivating is used. Sunny, dry sites with nutrient poor soils are best suited for fallows while areas with persistanct weeds are unsuitable.

Project Duration: Trials were initiated at Frick seven years ago and two years ago in the Grosses Moos region in the Swiss cantons of Bern and Fribourg
